The effects of coworking spaces on local communities in the Italian context

  • The phenomenon of coworking spaces has drawn particular attention by scholars only since the mid 2010s, and little is known about its effects on the urban context and more specifically on its role in fostering local communities. Within this context, the present paper provides an insight into coworking spaces in Italy, exploring their role in promoting local communities. To reach this goal, the results of a survey addressed to coworkers - those working in the coworking spaces - are presented and it is explored whether the proximity measures a là Boschma, which coworkers have experienced inside the coworking, play a role in improving both the local context and the development/ strengthening of local communities, and the working context through fostering the 'sense of community'.   • Il fenomeno degli spazi di coworking ha interessato gli studiosi a partire dalla seconda metà del 2000, ma poco si sa degli effetti di questi nuovi spazi del lavoro sul contesto urbano e sul ruolo che assumono nella creazione di comunità locali. L'articolo si propone di fornire un contributo esplorando il caso degli spazi di coworking in Italia. Si descrivono i risultati di una indagine rivolta ai coworkers - i lavoratori degli spazi di coworking - e si discute se e come le forme di prossimità 'a là Boschma', sperimentate dai coworkers all'interno del luogo di lavoro, giochino un ruolo nel miglioramento sia del contesto urbano, favorendo la creazione e/o il rafforzamento delle comunità locali, sia del contesto lavorativo, attraverso la creazione del 'senso di comunità'.
