Misogyny can be unconscious: a toning down of much older ideas in current thinking. The lack of knowledge shown by Sciascia on the issue of women was a cultural distraction. The positions expressed by other illustrious writers were much more troubling. Fifty years after Sciascia's response to Leosini in L'Ora, Dacia Maraini's opinion of Sciascia's mistakes about Sicilian women has not changed, even if the force of her antagonism has attenuated.
