The historiography on Catholics and political parties specifically Ppi and Dc enjoyed great fortune as long as the Dc existed. After its end, a sup- pression of this object of study prevailed, although a small group of scholars gave rise to a significant historiographical strand. However, the "party of the Catholics" played a crucial role in the profound transformation of the relationship between the Church and the Italian society, and the role played by the Christian Democrats as a governing party was crucial for the affirmation and development of Italian democracy.
