This paper offers a reinterpretation of a metrical inscription engraved on a Roman cippus and attributed to the Salentine poet George of Gallipoli. The author argues that this artifact was not reused as a support for a three-armed liturgical candlestick, as has been suggested, but rather as a base for an altar table. [Publisher's text]
