The essay investigates the centrality of the theme of choice by questioning three authors who have made it the focus of their reflections: Pascal, Høffding, Kierkegaard. If the Pascalian pari reread by Lucien Goldmann in the light of the HegelianMarxist dialectic, therefore transformed into an individual and social activity of the subject, brings out the constitutive problematic nature of history, the figure of leap, elaborated by Kierkegaard and Høffding as a question that affects the existence of the individual, draws attention to the paradox of freedom of choice, the unexplored foundation of man.
