Interdisciplinarity in academic research? Evidences from competitive project funding

2019 - Franco Angeli

79-93 p.

The paper investigates the characteristics of researchers with interdisciplinary research orientation with respect to those more disciplinary oriented. The research question is: how academic researchers dealing with interdisciplinary research perceive the quality of the projects developed, the stability of the collaborations of the research teams, and the importance of interdisciplinarity in the assessment of the projects submitted for funding, comparing with those dealing with disciplinary research? Because motivations and reputation of academics are not based on interdisciplinarity, we expect that researchers do not perceive any specific advantage/disadvantage of interdisciplinarity. The paper explores the development of the career trajectories of PhDs in Social Sciences and Humanities, analyzing them from two complementary points of view: first, we analyze the elements that can influence the variability of the entire career in terms of mobility between sectors and between countries, in the second part we consider the individual career steps and the determinants that favor the passage between different jobs.
