Price dynamics is one of the classic topics of economic history. Since the thirties of the 20th century, it has attracted a lively interest across all European countries. The materials collected and published at that time continue to constitute an important documentary basis for any research on the economic trend of pre-industrial economies. Interest in prices declined from the 1970s to the 1990s. However, it has resumed over the past fifteen to twenty years as a result of renewed attention to the issue of growth and long-term changes in the economies of the past. The comparison between the levels of development of different economies, such as Europe and Asia, together with the use of more advanced statistical tools in the field of economic history, has strengthened the interest in prices.

The contributions in this work are organized around two macro-themes: The formation of prices in pre-industrial economies and societies from the 12th century to the beginning of the 19th century and the movement of prices in the long run, as well as the existing relationship with that of other economic and non-economic variables, such as population, money supply, product, productivity, the speed of circulation of money, changes in institutions. Giampiero Nigro is a Professor at the University of Florence and the author of several publications on the organization of traffic in the Mediterranean Sea during the late Middle Ages, on the history of coin and bank and on consumption and nutrition in different social classes. He is also interested in the characteristics of the textile district of Prato between the 19th and 20th century. He is Scientific Director of the "F. La dinamica dei prezzi è uno degli argomenti classici della storia economica. L'attenzione per questo tema fu particolarmente viva a partire dagli anni Trenta del Novecento, in tutti i paesi europei. I materiali raccolti e pubblicati a quell'epoca continuano a costituire una base documentaria importante per ogni ricerca sull'andamento economico delle economie pre-industriali. L'interesse per i prezzi si ridusse dagli anni Settanta agli anni Novanta. È ripreso, tuttavia, negli ultimi quindici-venti anni come conseguenza della rinnovata attenzione per il tema della crescita e per i cambiamenti di lungo periodo nelle economie del passato. Il confronto fra i livelli di sviluppo di economie diverse, come quella europea e quella asiatica, insieme con l'uso di strumenti statistici più avanzati nel campo della storia economica, ha rafforzato l'interesse per i prezzi.

I contributi presenti in questo volume si articolano intorno a due macro-temi: La formazione dei prezzi nelle economie e società pre-industriali durante i secoli dal XII all'inizio del XIX e il movimento dei prezzi nel lungo periodo, nonché il rapporto esistente con quello di altre variabili economiche e non-economiche, quali la popolazione, la massa monetaria, il prodotto, la produttività, la velocità di circolazione della moneta, i cambiamenti nelle istituzioni. Giampiero Nigro,professore presso l'Università di Firenze, è autore di pubblicazioni sull'organizzazione dei traffici nel Mediterraneo durante il basso Medioevo, sulla storia della moneta e della banca, sui consumi e l'alimentazione nei differenziati ceti sociali. Un ulteriore filone di interessi riguarda gli studi sulle caratteristiche del distretto tessile pratese tra XIX e XX secolo.
