Between 1968 and 1977 the writer Leonardo Sciascia and the director Elio Petri created some of their most intricate and disputed works. Among these, Todo modo is the best example of their political conception of art. It appears as a political text, despite its different versions, and as the expression of a widespread political and cultural mood ‒ not only in the "new left" ‒ reflecting the need for a radical change and the opposition to Republican institutions and to the party who embodied them in the aftermath of the Second World War: the Christian Democracy.
