La chiesa di San Gaetano in Padova : archeologia, storia, arte, architettura e restauri
xxxix, 743 pages : illustrations (chiefly color)
Includes bibliographical references (pages 651-712) and index.
This volume on the church of Santi Simone e Giuda, also known as San Gaetano, built by architect Vincenzo Scamozzi is being published within the same philosophy as in the three volumes on the Pontificia Basilica di Sant'Antonio. The site of the church coincides with a section of the ancient Roman road Annia (2nd century BC). Attached to the church was the convent of the Clerics Regular, known as the Theatine Fathers, who took up residence in 1573 after the suppression of the Congregation of the Humiliati in 1571. These are important church architectures in the urban context of the city, subjected, like all works of art, to the subtle scalpel of stylistic analysis by scholars of great scientific rigour to understand the history of a religious community, of an organised society measured by time and space in the city.
