The history of the Risorgimento is here rethought in the light of the recent historiographical debate on the origins of human rights. Far from representing an era in which the reasons for independence supplanted the demands of freedom, the decades between the Triennium and Italian unification represented an era in which fundamental rights found a way to express themselves and in part to assert themselves for the first time in the Italian context.
