L'iscrizione tarantina di Brytilos

2023 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 431-448

A black-painted stemless skyphos provides us with isolated epigraphic evidence, dating back to the third quarter of 5th century BC, of the presence of a resident of Oscan origin, whose name was Brytilos, in the territory of the Greek colony of Taras. The precious inscription, which holds an unusual ownership formula, based on the merger of two letters, pushes us to consider two problems: the role of individual mobility within the relationship between the Greek colonial environments and the Italic cultures and the role of bilingual immigrants in the transmission of the Greek alphabet.
