Una sconosciuta edizione dei Britannico (Alexandre de Villedieu, Doctrinale, Brescia, eredi di Ludovico Britannico, 1564)

2021 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 123-140

The purpose of this article is to provide a first, brief description of a previously unknown and rare book by Pietro Paolo Vergerio: Quali sieno gli articoli (1564), located in the library of the University of Erfurt (Germany). This book contains two very different works: a dialogue (Dialogi Fontio e Vida interlocutori), and a collection of short texts (called “fragments”) and letters (Poche lettere e certi come fragmenti di un servo di Giesu Christo). While the dialogue focuses exclusively on the decrees of the Council of Trent, the “fragments” and letters also provide the opportunity for the author to talk about his life. In particular, the last fragment acts as a sort of short autobiography. The value of this discovery is manifold: it contributes to what is generally known about Vergerio's opus; secondly, as a close reading of the text suggests, the book's second half may have been the last pages written by Vergerio, who at the time was gravely ill and close to death.
