La preparazione alla terza guerra d'indipendenza del 1866 e i primi momenti del conflitto visti attraverso le pagine dell'unico foglio varesino allora pubblicato, «La Libertà». Traspare l'entusiasmo della popolazione di Varese nei confronti di Garibaldi e dei suoi volontari, l'appoggio incondizionato del giornale all'impresa ma anche l'impreparazione delle alte cariche dell'Esercito sabaudo ad affrontare la guerra. Sfogliando il giornale dal n. 20 del 6 maggio all'ultimo numero pubblicato, il 28 del 1o luglio, abbiamo una immagine molto viva del clima che si percepiva a Varese in quei giorni. Varese goes to war preparations for the intervention through the pages of «La Libertà». The preparation for the third war of independence in 1866 and the first moments of the conflict seen through the pages of the only sheet of Varese published at the time, «La Libertà». The enthusiasm of the population of Varese towards Garibaldi and his volunteers, the unconditional support of the newspaper to the company, but also the lack of preparation of the high-ranking army of the Savoy to face the war shines through.
