The Author examines the traumatic effects of analyst's serious bodily illness on the analytic couple. Literature review ranges among diametrically opposite theoretical and clinical perspectives. The inescapable intrusion into the analytical space of intensely traumatic elements of reality concerning the analyst alters the relational field, mobilizing fantasies, defences and emotions in both the analyst and in the patient.
