Il politecnico di Brioschi e la guerra del 1866

La guerra del 1866 rivelò alla classe dirigente nazionale le debolezze di fondo del nuovo Stato unitario e spinse a serrare le file su una linea accentuatamente moderata e centralista. Testimonianza di tale tendenza è data dalla rivista «Il Politecnico», portata già ai vertici del giornalismo europeo da Cattaneo, e diretta dal 1866 al 1868 da Francesco Brioschi. Il presente saggio ripercorre le vicende della prestigiosa testata e mostra in particolare il contributo che la Quarta serie diretta da Brioschi diede al dibattito pubblico, dopo l'esito della guerra, sui problemi nazionali e sull'indirizzo da seguire per colmare le gravi carenze ereditate dal passato. The 1866 war revealed to the national ruling class the basic weaknesses of the new unified state and led to closing ranks and adopting an accentuated moderate and centralist line. Evidence of this trend is given by the magazine «Il Politecnico», already brought to the top of European journalism by Cattaneo, and edited from 1866 to 1868 by Francesco Brioschi. The present essay traces the events concerning this prestigious journal and shows in particular the contribution that the fourth series edited by Brioschi gave to the public debate, after the outcome of the war, on national problems and on the direction to follow to remedy the serious deficiencies inherited from the past.
