Another Look at the Inscription on Poggio Civitate Artifact PC19710684
P. 215-222
In this article, we re-segment and reanalyze the Etruscan inscription incised on artifact PC19710684 (= ETAS 2.16), an ivory tessera hospitalis recovered from Poggio Civitate (Murlo). Our analysis of the inscription yields a family name, kilana-, which can be connected to the gens Cilnia, a well-known family with ties to Arretium. The personal name on the plaque, vhasti, which is that of a woman, is unusual for tesserae hospitales. We suggest that the bond of hospitality between members of the ruling family at Poggio Civitate and the gens Cilnia was, in this case, legitimized by a conjugal union. [Publisher's text]
