Cilento 1828 : anatomia di una tradizione politica

Sectarianism was a widespread phenomenon in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the Restoration. Dating back to the Napoleonic rule, the Carboneria, rooted into the revolutionary democratic culture, was composed mainly of the bourgeois groups but was aiming at conquering the masses through its popular, religious rituals. The sectarian activity was not interrupted after the end of the Constitutional regime 1820-21. The revolt that took place in 1828 in the Salerno area was an attempt to reply the event of 1820; failed and brutally repressed, it was therefore often recalled in the democratic discourse and memories. The article aims to discuss the many levels of this "notables" revolt, which sheds light on the construction and radicalization of a democratic tradition. [Publisher's text]
