Copernicus as a Logician and Natural Philosopher : A Discussion on Lerner's Interpretation

Il saggio esamina il tratteggio di Copernico come logico e filosofo della natura, quale emerge dalla recente edizione Les Belles Lettres del De revolutionibus. Facendo valere il metodo e l'ispirazione platonici cui rinviano accertate fonti copernicane e le testimonianze di Retico, vengono invalidate la prospettiva di influenze aristoteliche e l'idea, suggerita dalle ricostruzioni proposte nell'edizione francese, che gli argomenti fisici del De revolutionibus siano deboli ed esposti in modo disordinato. Viene altresì contestato che l'accesso al patrimonio greco fosse precluso a Copernico dalla conoscenza approssimativa della lingua. [Testo dell'editore].

This essay examines the figure of Copernicus the logician and natural philosopher, as it emerges from the recent edition of De revolutionibus by Les Belles Lettres. In the light of the Platonist method and inspiration which well-established Copernican sources and Rheticus' testimonies refer to, it disputes the prospect of borrowings from Aristotle and the idea that De revolutionibus is marked by weak and haphazard physical arguments, as the reconstruction offered in the French edition suggests. Moreover, the essay challenges the judgement that Copernicus had no real access to Greek sources on account of his poor command of the language. [Publisher's text].
