Global English, transnational flows : Australia and New Zealand in translation

2012 - Tangram Edizioni Scientifiche

131 p.

Global English, Transnational Flows: Australia and New Zealand in Translation questions widespread assumptions regarding the relation between English as a global language and Australian and New Zealand English varieties. It aims at being a significant and innovative intervention in the study of loanwords and loan translation in settler and indigenous strands of Australian and New Zealand English. Moreover, the book addresses the central, ongoing theoretical debate concerning the question of translating such post-colonial Englishes. The analysis focuses on interlingual translations of post-colonial English language varieties, such as the Italian translation of Patrick White's Voss (1957) and Katherine Mansfield's "At the Bay" (1921), and the interlingual and intralingual audiovisual translation of films such as Australia (2008) and The Whale Rider (1987), in order to verify whether current translation practices are adequate in facilitating intercultural dialogue.
