Tra continuità e discontinuità : il Trattato di Casalanza : verso quale modernità?

2016 - Franco Angeli

117-148 p.

At the beginning of the 19th century the Italian Mezzogiorno underwent a deep institutional transformation. The French dynasty had introduced an innovative state system and modernised accordingly its political, administrative and social structures. This resulted in an irreversible change for the country. The Treaty of Casalanza (May 1815), which followed Murat's defeat, did not cause a standstill in the modernization process. The treaty's enact-ments provided for the upkeep of the French Decade's rules, social structures and officials showing that there was no break in the transition process to modernity. Anyway the process was far from coherently carried out, as it was the case, considered by the author, of Capua - one of the most important cities of the Terra di Lavoro province. The difficulties seemingly met by Capua in practicing modernity contributed to its sliding towards a marginal position and gave way to the regionalization process which had been started as of the French years.
